Alcohol Advice

Alcohol β€” Know Your Limits

The NHS advises that both men and women should not regularly drink more than 14 units of alcohol per week β€” and if you do drink that much, to spread it over 3 or more days rather than consuming it all at once. "Regularly" means drinking this amount most weeks.

🍺 How Many Units Is That?

  • A pint of regular-strength beer (4%) β‰ˆ 2.3 units
  • A large glass of wine 250ml (13%) β‰ˆ 3.25 units
  • A single measure of spirits 25ml (40%) β‰ˆ 1 unit
  • A bottle of wine β‰ˆ 9–10 units
  • The 14-unit weekly guideline = roughly 6 pints of average-strength lager
  • Regularly exceeding limits raises risk of liver disease, cancer, heart disease and stroke
  • Alcohol can affect sleep, mental health and weight
  • Aim for several alcohol-free days each week
  • If you're concerned about your drinking, our GPs can help β€” confidentially
πŸ’¬
Speak to your GP about cutting down. Free support is also available via Drinkaware.co.uk and NHS alcohol support services.
Smoking Cessation

Stop Smoking β€” We Can Help

Stopping smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health β€” and your chances of success are significantly higher with professional support. If you don't pay for prescriptions, the process is entirely free.

⏱️ What Happens When You Stop

  • 20 minutes: Blood pressure and heart rate return to normal
  • 8 hours: Carbon monoxide levels halve; oxygen levels normalise
  • 48 hours: All carbon monoxide cleared; taste and smell improve
  • 72 hours: Breathing becomes easier; energy levels increase
  • 1 month: Skin, lungs and circulation begin to improve
  • 1 year: Risk of heart attack halved vs a smoker
  • 10 years: Risk of lung cancer halved vs a smoker

Weight Management

Weight & Diet β€” Personalised Support

Maintaining a healthy weight reduces risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and several cancers. We offer personalised support β€” from 1:1 health trainer sessions to nurse-led appointments and referrals to specialist weight management services.

πŸ“ Waist Measurement Matters

BMI gives a useful guide, but waist circumference is an independent marker of metabolic risk. Tummy fat (visceral fat) is more dangerous than fat elsewhere in the body.

  • Men: healthy waist <94cm (37"); increased risk >102cm (40")
  • Women: healthy waist <80cm (32"); increased risk >88cm (35")
  • South Asian men and women may have lower thresholds β€” speak to your GP
  • 1:1 Health Trainer sessions for lifestyle change and healthy eating
  • Nurse-led weight management appointments
  • Referral to specialist weight loss services where appropriate
  • Prescriptions for weight management medication (Wegovy/Ozempic) if clinically appropriate
  • Small changes matter β€” even 5–10% weight loss has meaningful health benefits
