Before You Try

Preconception Advice

If you're thinking about starting a family, a preconception appointment with your GP is a great first step. We can help you prepare your body and mind for a healthy pregnancy — before you even start trying.

  • Start taking folic acid 400mcg daily at least 3 months before trying to conceive
  • Review any existing medications with your GP — some are not safe in pregnancy
  • Check your rubella (German measles) immunity status
  • Stop smoking, reduce alcohol, and aim for a healthy BMI
  • Discuss any family history of genetic conditions
  • Ensure cervical screening is up to date before conceiving

💊 Folic Acid — Why It Matters

Folic acid significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Begin taking it before you start trying — ideally 3 months in advance — and continue through the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It is available free on prescription or over the counter.

🌱
Book a preconception appointment at Saluja Clinic — we will work through a personalised checklist and answer any questions you have about preparing for pregnancy.
During Pregnancy

Antenatal Care — Your Pregnancy, Your Choice

When you find out you're pregnant, you can contact your GP, contact a midwife directly, or self-refer to a maternity unit of your choice. You don't need to wait for a GP appointment to start your antenatal care.

📋 What to Do When You Find Out

  • Contact us or self-refer directly to your chosen maternity unit
  • Your first "booking appointment" with a midwife is usually at 8–10 weeks
  • Most women have around 10 antenatal appointments for a first pregnancy
  • Your 12-week scan and 20-week anomaly scan will be arranged
  • Keep taking folic acid until 12 weeks; take vitamin D throughout

Time-Sensitive

Emergency Contraception

If you've had unprotected sex or contraception has failed, emergency contraception is available free of charge. The sooner you act, the more effective it is — ideally within 72 hours, and up to 120 hours (5 days) after sex.

Available as a tablet (morning-after pill) or IUD (coil — the most effective option). Also available free from pharmacies, Brook centres, sexual health clinics, and some urgent care centres.

After the Birth

Postnatal Care — The First 6–8 Weeks

Postnatal care continues for 6–8 weeks after your baby is born. During this time, both you and your baby will be monitored by our team and your health visitor to ensure a healthy recovery and good start to life.

  • 6–8 week baby check with your GP — development, weight gain, hip check
  • 6-week postnatal check for mum — physical and emotional wellbeing
  • Baby vaccinations begin at 8 weeks — book with the practice nurse
  • Ongoing support from your health visitor for feeding, sleep, and development
  • Postnatal depression screening — please talk to us, you are not alone

👶 Your Baby's 6–8 Week Check

This important appointment checks your baby's growth, heart, hips, eyes, and reflexes. It also provides an opportunity to discuss feeding, sleep, and any concerns you have. Please book this appointment through reception when your baby is around 5–6 weeks old.

💛 Postnatal Depression

Up to 1 in 5 new mothers experiences postnatal depression. It is not a sign of weakness — it is a medical condition and it is treatable. Please speak to your GP or health visitor if you feel low, anxious, tearful, or overwhelmed in the weeks after birth. We are here to help.
