Folic acid significantly reduces the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida. Begin taking it before you start trying — ideally 3 months in advance — and continue through the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. It is available free on prescription or over the counter.
When you find out you're pregnant, you can contact your GP, contact a midwife directly, or self-refer to a maternity unit of your choice. You don't need to wait for a GP appointment to start your antenatal care.

If you've had unprotected sex or contraception has failed, emergency contraception is available free of charge. The sooner you act, the more effective it is — ideally within 72 hours, and up to 120 hours (5 days) after sex.

Postnatal care continues for 6–8 weeks after your baby is born. During this time, both you and your baby will be monitored by our team and your health visitor to ensure a healthy recovery and good start to life.
This important appointment checks your baby's growth, heart, hips, eyes, and reflexes. It also provides an opportunity to discuss feeding, sleep, and any concerns you have. Please book this appointment through reception when your baby is around 5–6 weeks old.
Up to 1 in 5 new mothers experiences postnatal depression. It is not a sign of weakness — it is a medical condition and it is treatable. Please speak to your GP or health visitor if you feel low, anxious, tearful, or overwhelmed in the weeks after birth. We are here to help.
