Understanding BMI

What your BMI means for your health

BMI is a useful starting point, but health is much more than a single number. Here's what else matters alongside your result.

🏃
Physical Activity
Even within a 'healthy' BMI range, low fitness levels increase cardiovascular risk. Regular movement is independently protective.
🍎
Diet Quality
What you eat matters as much as how much. A diet rich in vegetables, wholegrains, and lean protein supports metabolic health at any BMI.
📊
Waist Circumference
Fat distribution matters. A waist measurement above 88cm (women) or 102cm (men) indicates elevated risk regardless of BMI category.
😴
Sleep & Stress
Poor sleep and chronic stress disrupt hormones that regulate appetite and metabolism, contributing to weight gain over time.
🩸
Blood Tests
Cholesterol, blood glucose, and blood pressure readings give a fuller picture of cardiometabolic health than BMI alone.
